Chapter 8

The worst part about auditions was the waiting afterward. If they offered you the part, then you heard from them sometime in the next few days. If they didn’t want you for the part, then you simply heard nothing. Annie was starting to get used to hearing nothing. It was in times like that, that she was glad that she worked at such a busy, prestigious restaurant.

Annie had been promoted to the head of the waiting staff very quickly as she was very good at her job. She liked to see people have a good time, and she always seemed to know how to make people happy without costing the restaurant any extra money. Her bosses liked her, and so did most of the other servers. It helped that Annie made the best tips in the house, and was always willing to help the others get better tips too. Most days, Annie didn’t have any time to think about anything other than her job when she was there. When she wasn’t at work, there were always a thousand things to fill her time with.

As the weeks passed, Annie had to admit to herself that she probably wasn’t going to get the part. It was time that she got herself back out there. It was L.A., after all, and there was a casting call every other day. She needed to get back to auditioning. Sure, they might not be parts in a blockbuster movie, but if they were big enough to put another role on her résumé, it would be worth it.

After a few auditions, she got right back into the rhythm of work and auditions. She had all of her audition papers spread out in order, so that she could study and look over them the night before each one. Every now and then she thought about Vic Rossen, and what would have happened had she taken him up on his offer. Of course, that wasn’t just because her life and career would have taken off in an instant, it also had a lot to do with those big arms and broad shoulders of his, and the sexy accent that made her even think twice about his offer.

Of course, even with all that daydreaming, the last thing that she had ever expected was to run into him in the elevator one morning. She was going up to an audition, leafing through her papers when she heard his distinctive accent.

“Twelve please.” He said to another lady standing closer to the elevator buttons. She grinned over at him, winking before pushing the button. Annie would have rolled her eyes, but she was too busy being shocked at seeing him.

“Mr. Rossen?”

He turned in surprise, and a smile slid across his face. “Annabelle Gibbons! How good to see you.”

Annie blushed. “You too.”

He smiled, his eyes moving up and down her body in that same way that he had on her first audition. When his eyes met hers again, she nearly lost her breath from the intensity of his gaze.
